Northern Lights in Norway - Northern Lights Tour Packages from India with IMAD Travel

Northern Lights Tour Packages from India — Iceland, Norway, Finland & Arctic Cruises

IMAD Travel plans Northern Lights tour packages from India to the places where the aurora borealis is most reliable: Iceland, northern Norway around Tromsø, Finnish Lapland, Swedish Lapland and the Norwegian coast by Arctic cruise. Guided Iceland tours start at ₹1,35,900 (€1,235) per person for five days; private trips to Norway and Finland are built around your dates.

Every trip is a land package, so it is the same wherever you fly from — Mumbai, Hyderabad, Delhi, Bengaluru or Chennai. We book your flights separately at the live fare, and our in-house team handles the Schengen visa that Norway, Finland, Sweden and Iceland all require.

The aurora is never guaranteed — anyone who promises it is not being straight with you. What we do is give you the best odds: the right place, the right months, and enough nights to have three or four real chances.

Plan your aurora trip: tell us your month, your number of nights and who is travelling. Vipasha on our Europe desk will reply the same working day.

What Is the Aurora Borealis, and Is It the Same as the Northern Lights?

The aurora borealis and the Northern Lights are two names for the same thing. “Aurora borealis” is the scientific name, from the Latin for “dawn of the north”; “Northern Lights” is the everyday English name. Its southern twin is the aurora australis, seen from Tasmania, New Zealand and Antarctica.

What you see is the sun’s weather reaching the Earth. Charged particles from the sun are funnelled by the Earth’s magnetic field towards the poles, where they hit gases high in the atmosphere and make them glow — oxygen gives the greens and reds, nitrogen the blues and purples. That is why the aurora appears in a ring around the magnetic pole, and why you have to travel north, inside that ring, to see it reliably.

For an Indian traveller that means the Arctic: Iceland, northern Norway, Finnish or Swedish Lapland, between late September and March.

Northern Lights Tours in Iceland

Iceland is the easiest aurora trip to book as a ready-made tour: fixed departures, an English-speaking guide, and evenings set aside for Northern Lights hunting, with glaciers, waterfalls and hot springs filling the days.

All Iceland tours, summer ones included, are on our Iceland tour packages from India page.

Northern Lights in Norway — Tromsø, the Easiest Aurora Base

Tromsø is the easiest place to build a first aurora trip around. It sits at 69°N, well inside the auroral ring, and unlike most Arctic viewing spots it is a real city — hotels at every level, restaurants open all winter, and the Fjellheisen cable car above town.

That matters more than it sounds. A remote cabin gives darker skies, but if cloud closes in you have nowhere to go. From Tromsø, aurora chase vehicles drive inland towards Finland to find a gap in the cloud, which is why the same forecast often produces more sightings here than from a fixed lodge.

Tromsø, Norway
Latitude69°N — inside the auroral zone
SeasonLate September to late March
Typical stay3–4 nights, for three or four viewing attempts
Also worth doingWhale watching (Nov–Jan), husky sledding, the Fjellheisen cable car, a Sámi reindeer camp
Trade-offCoastal weather changes fast — you are buying mobility, not guaranteed clear skies

Northern Lights in Finland — Lapland, Glass Igloos and Santa Claus Village

Finnish Lapland is the aurora trip for families. Inland weather is steadier than on the coast, the forest is quiet and dark, and the days are full: husky and reindeer safaris, snowmobiling and, in Rovaniemi, Santa Claus Village on the Arctic Circle. The signature stay is a glass igloo in Saariselkä or near Rovaniemi, where you can watch the sky from bed.

Sweden, the Arctic Cruise and Multi-Country Aurora Trips

Abisko, Swedish Lapland, sits in a rain shadow that keeps its skies among the clearest in the Arctic. Our Arctic Trail, 11 days crosses Finland, Norway and Sweden: a Kakslauttanen glass igloo, Rovaniemi, Tromsø, the train past Abisko to Kiruna and two nights at the Icehotel — from ₹4,23,500 (€3,850). See our Sweden tour packages.

The Arctic coastal cruise sails the Norwegian coast, with the ship carrying you away from cloud. Our Grand Norway Winter Tour, 14 days includes 5 nights on the Hurtigruten from Kirkenes to Bergen — from ₹4,82,900 (€4,390). See all our cruise packages.

Four capitals and the aurora: Classic Scandinavia, 13 days — Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo, then a Northern Lights boat tour in Tromsø and Santa Claus Village, a campfire aurora night and ice-floating in Rovaniemi, ending in Helsinki — from ₹4,40,000 (€4,000).

Norway and Finland in one trip: Arctic Norway & Finnish Lapland, 10 days — Oslo, a Senja glass cabin, Tromsø, Kilpisjärvi, Levi and Rovaniemi with three aurora chases — from ₹6,27,600 (€5,705).

How Much Does a Northern Lights Trip from India Cost?

A Northern Lights trip from India costs from ₹1,35,900 (€1,235) per person for a five-day guided Iceland tour, land-only on twin sharing. Tromsø tours start at ₹2,54,100 (€2,310) for 6 days, Finnish Lapland at ₹2,36,000 (€2,145) for 7 days, and multi-country trips with Sweden’s Icehotel or the Hurtigruten cruise from ₹4,23,500 (€3,850).

What moves the price: the destination (Norway and Iceland cost more per night than most of Europe), hotel class, the number of nights, and extras such as a glass igloo or a cruise cabin. On top of the land package, budget for flights from your city (booked at the live fare), the Schengen visa — ₹9,900 (€90) per adult — and meals that aren’t included.

Rupee figures for euro-priced tours calculated at €1 = ₹110 (October 2026).

When Is the Best Time to See the Northern Lights?

Late September to March, with September–October and February–March often the best balance: dark nights, more settled weather than midwinter, and good geomagnetic activity around the equinoxes. December and January are darkest but coldest, with very short days. The best hours are roughly 9 pm to 2 am. Stay at least three or four nights — that is what turns a hopeful trip into a likely one.

The sun’s current activity cycle peaked in 2024–25, and strong aurora displays remain more frequent than usual for a few years after a peak.

Can You See the Aurora Borealis from Mumbai, Chennai or Anywhere in India?

No. India is far too far south of the auroral ring for the aurora borealis to be a planned event anywhere in the country. The rare exception is Hanle in Ladakh, which recorded a red glow during an exceptionally strong solar storm — the kind nobody can forecast weeks ahead.

If you want to see the aurora, you have to travel to it: Iceland, northern Norway, or Finnish and Swedish Lapland, between September and March.

Do You Need a Visa for a Northern Lights Trip?

Yes. Iceland, Norway, Finland and Sweden are all in the Schengen area, so Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa — ₹9,900 (€90) government fee per adult. Apply six to eight weeks before travel; slots fill fast before the winter holidays. Alaska needs a US visa and Canada a Canadian visa. Our in-house team prepares and checks every file — see our Schengen visa service.

At least three or four nights at the aurora base. Our Iceland tours include two to six aurora evenings depending on length.

No. The aurora depends on solar activity and clear skies. More nights, a mobile chase and darker locations improve your chances — that’s how we plan.

Yes — a Schengen visa for Iceland, Norway, Finland and Sweden (₹9,900 (€90) per adult). Our visa team handles it.

Yes. Finnish Lapland is the easiest for families; most guided Iceland tours accept children from 8 years. We pace private trips for grandparents.

Yes, this is one of the most photographed parts of any Lapland trip. The famous Kakslauttanen and Aurora Resort glass-roof igloos in Saariselkä, Finland, let you watch the aurora from bed. We include 1–2 igloo nights in our Finnish Lapland family package and can extend on request. Book 10+ months in advance for peak December–February dates.

Yes — our Grand Norway Winter Tour includes 5 nights on the Hurtigruten coastal cruise, and Tromsø tours include an aurora cruise by catamaran.

It’s the same phenomenon at the opposite pole. The aurora australis is seen from Tasmania, southern New Zealand and Antarctica, and is far harder to reach from India.

Thermal base layers, a down jacket, waterproof outer layers, insulated boots, gloves, a hat and a scarf. Many tours lend ice grippers; your phone camera in night mode works surprisingly well.

Days are planned to be worthwhile on their own — glaciers, hot springs, husky safaris, cities. On group tours, some operators offer a free second attempt on aurora boat trips; we’ll tell you what applies to your tour.

Ready to chase the aurora? Send us your month, the number of nights and who’s travelling. Vipasha’s desk will come back the same working day with the right destination and an honest view of your chances.
