On the second day of your journey, start your morning by meeting with your guide to embark on a visit to some of the most famous landmarks on the planet: the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx. These remarkable structures have been standing for approximately 4,500 years, offering a glimpse into ancient history.
As the oldest and only largely intact Wonder of the Ancient World, the pyramids are truly awe-inspiring. Following this, we’ll head to the Egyptian Museum, which houses one of the world’s finest collections of antiquities. Stroll through its treasure-laden galleries, where you’ll find an impressive array of artifacts from Tutankhamun’s tomb.
Embark on a journey today to uncover the marvels of ancient Thebes. Our adventure begins with the Colossi of Memnon, towering 17-meter statues located on Luxor’s west bank. These granite giants depict Pharaoh Amenhotep III and were once part of a grand colonnade.
Next, we’ll visit the magnificent Valley of the Kings, a royal necropolis nestled beneath arid hills, housing over 60 pharaohs’ tombs adorned with intricate reliefs and paintings. With your guide, delve into this vast and awe-inspiring site where New Kingdom rulers (16th to 11th century BCE) found their eternal rest in secrecy, as ongoing archaeological discoveries continue to unfold. Your guide will illuminate the history and myths surrounding these extraordinary figures, their burial customs, and the importance of the well-preserved artwork and hieroglyphics found within the deepest tombs.
Following our exploration of three fascinating royal tombs, we’ll proceed to the Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut. This remarkable structure, with its sharp, colonnaded design, stands in striking contrast to the rugged cliffs behind it, forming a breathtaking natural amphitheater. Built by one of Egypt’s most renowned queens, the temple signifies her significance among her predecessors.
Upon returning to the boat, you can enjoy lunch and take some time to unwind on deck or in your cabin before we embark on our journey to Edfu. The trip from Luxor to Edfu typically occurs between 1 PM and 11 PM; however, departure times may vary due to river traffic. As we travel towards Edfu, we’ll navigate through the Esna Lock and continue upstream.
Today, our journey brings us to Edfu, a place rich with ancient settlements and temples. This vibrant area also boasts a lively town center and a bustling bazaar.
After exploring, we’ll head back to the boat to continue our upriver voyage. You’ll have ample free time to unwind on the sundeck, soaking in views of fishermen casting their nets, farmers tending their fields, and the desert hills framing the lush riverbanks.
By afternoon, we will reach the Kom Ombo Temple. Perched dramatically on the Nile’s edge—47 kilometers north of Aswan and 168 kilometers south of Luxor—the temple’s towering columns present an awe-inspiring sight as you approach from the river.
The temple, dedicated to the deities Sobek and Haroeris, showcases intricately carved reliefs that highlight the area’s significance as a capital during the Ptolemaic period. Although Kom Ombo is now a tranquil agricultural village surrounded by sugar cane fields, its strategic location along the Nile once made it a vital hub in Upper Egypt. As you stroll through the temple’s colonnades and admire the depictions of royal propaganda, you’ll immerse yourself in this rich historical tapestry.
Afterwards, return to your cruise boat to continue your journey upriver towards Aswan.
As part of the 9 Days Premium Egypt tour package from India, you will rise before dawn for an early start. Enjoy a leisurely drive to the historic Abu Simbel temples, located near Egypt’s southern frontier. Arriving early at Abu Simbel, you’ll witness one of the most breathtaking sights imaginable. These two massive sandstone edifices were constructed in the 1200s BCE by Ramses II as enduring tributes to himself and his beloved wife Nefertari. The larger temple honors three principal Egyptian gods and features four colossal statues of Ramses II on its front, while the smaller temple is devoted to Hathor, the goddess of love, with sculptures representing Nefertari.
Located along the shores of the man-made Lake Nasser, these historic structures faced the threat of flooding due to the Aswan High Dam’s construction. However, a massive project successfully preserved them by dismantling and relocating the temples to elevated ground, where they remain today.
Upon returning to Aswan, you have the remainder of the day free for personal exploration.
This afternoon, we’ll experience a traditional felucca ride around the islands of the Nile River.
Optional Excursion – Explore the Philae Temple
Discover the Philae Temple, located on an island just south of Aswan. Constructed by Egypt’s final ancient dynasty, the Ptolemaic, this temple honors Isis, the goddess of healing, magic, and birth, along with her husband Osiris and their son Horus.
Begin your journey with a 20-minute drive from Aswan to the pier, followed by a 20-minute boat trip to Agilkia Island where you’ll find the Philae Temple complex. Spend around two hours exploring this historic site before returning to Aswan via boat and vehicle.
Inclusions: return transportation (boat and road vehicle) from Aswan to Agilkia Island, entrance into Philae Temple complex
