Chipi, Sindhudurg or Malvan — which airport name is right?
All three name the same airport, and mixing them up is the commonest booking error.
- Sindhudurg Airport is official — SDW is the code on your ticket.
- Chipi is the local name, after Chipi-Parule village in Vengurla taluka.
- Malvan is the best-known nearby town, but it is a separate town in a neighbouring taluka — 37 minutes away by road, not at the airport.
Book SDW, expect locals to say Chipi, and plan the drive to Malvan.

Fastest routes run via Sagari Mahamarg; Kudal via Sagari Mahamarg and SH119.
Two things people get wrong: Tarkarli is farther than Malvan, not nearer. And Malvan town starts before Malvan Beach, so a town stay is under 37 minutes. Kudal is the Konkan Railway town, making a train-in, fly-out trip practical.
Can Chipi (Sindhudurg) airport handle night flights?
Yes — night landing has been sanctioned, with central government permission obtained, and roughly ₹2.5 crore spent through MSEB strengthening the airport’s power supply. Both were announced in late July 2026.
This matters more than any launch announcement. Unreliable power and no night-landing capability were the practical reasons larger airlines avoided Chipi and why services here have been patchy. Night operations widen the usable slot window at both ends — which is what makes a Mumbai-region rotation commercially workable.
