Six countries, two seas and some of Europe’s most storied towns come together on this 13 Days Balkans Tour Package — a guided coach journey from Bucharest through Transylvania, Belgrade, Sarajevo and Mostar to Dubrovnik, Split, Plitvice, Lake Bled and finally Venice. It is planned and supported by IMAD Travel, an IATA-certified travel agency in Hyderabad serving travellers from across India since 2011. Prefer to travel at your own pace? Our team can also arrange this same route, or a similar one, as a custom package for your family or group, with your own dates and hotels — just quote the tour code IMAD-EU-61477 when you contact us.

Hotels with breakfast, eight dinners, guided city tours in seven cities, the coach with an English-speaking guide, the boats to Lokrum, Bled island and St Mark’s, and tickets at Bran, Biertan, Hunedoara, Sirmium, the Museum of Yugoslavia, Dubrovnik, Diocletian’s Palace, Plitvice and Postojna are all arranged before you leave.

Bucharest and the castles of Transylvania

The journey starts in Bucharest, once called the Little Paris of the East, where an afternoon panoramic tour shows you the old quarter and the Palace of the Parliament, one of the largest buildings in the world. The next morning the coach climbs into the Carpathian Mountains, through deep forests to Sinaia and the fairy-tale gardens of the Peles and Pelisor castles. Then comes the stop every traveller waits for: Bran Fortress, the 14th-century castle on a rock that the world knows as Dracula’s Castle (tickets included). The day ends inside the walls of Sighisoara, a living medieval town on the UNESCO list, with a special dinner in the house where Vlad the Impaler — the real Dracula — was born.

Transylvania is also a land of fortified Saxon churches, and you go inside one of the finest at Biertan (tickets included) before strolling the squares of Sibiu, the region’s old capital. In the afternoon the Gothic towers and drawbridge of Hunedoara (Corvin) Castle, often called the most beautiful castle in Romania, rise in front of you (tickets included), and the night is in Timisoara, the graceful city where Romania’s 1989 revolution began.

Belgrade, where the Danube meets the Sava

Crossing into Serbia, you reach Belgrade, a lively capital standing where two great rivers meet. The panoramic tour takes in the parliament and the busy centre, then the ramparts of Kalemegdan Fortress, with sweeping views over the rivers. The visit to the Museum of Yugoslavia, where Marshal Tito rests in the House of Flowers, is included and brings the story of the former Yugoslavia to life. On the way south, Sremska Mitrovica — once Sirmium, a capital of the Roman Empire — shows you the remains of its Imperial Palace (included).

Sarajevo and Mostar: where East meets West

The road crosses the green hills of the Republic of Srpska to Sarajevo. Arriving in the late afternoon, you can wander the Baščaršija bazaar, the old Ottoman market of coppersmiths, coffee houses and cobbled lanes, before dinner. The next morning a guided tour explains why Sarajevo is called the Jerusalem of Europe: mosques, Orthodox and Catholic churches and a synagogue stand within a few minutes’ walk of each other, around a mosque more than 500 years old and the famous Sebilj fountain. The drive to Mostar follows the emerald Neretva river to the town’s iconic Old Bridge, rebuilt stone by stone after the war — a symbol of the communities it joins. You have free time for lunch and photos before crossing into Croatia for dinner in Dubrovnik.

Dubrovnik and the island of Lokrum

Two nights in Dubrovnik give you time to fall for the Pearl of the Adriatic. A local guide leads you through the old town inside its mighty walls, with tickets to the Franciscan Monastery, home to the oldest working pharmacy in Europe, and the Cathedral of the Assumption. A short boat ride takes you to Lokrum, a green island of peacocks and the ruins of an 11th-century Benedictine monastery, used as a filming location for Game of Thrones (the boat runs from April to October). The rest of the day is yours to walk the walls, swim or watch the sunset from a cliff-top café. Dinner is included both nights; on some dates the hotel is in nearby Cavtat, a pretty harbour town.

Ston, Split and the lakes of Plitvice

The coast road north passes Ston, whose medieval walls are among the longest in the world, and crosses the new Pelješac Bridge over the sea. At midday you reach Split, where a local guide takes you inside Diocletian’s Palace, the 1,700-year-old Roman emperor’s residence that is still a living part of the city, full of cafés, shops and homes. The next day turns inland to Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO site of 16 turquoise lakes linked by waterfalls and wooden walkways; your boat or panoramic train ride is included. The night is by the sea again in Opatija, the elegant resort where Austro-Hungarian aristocrats once spent their winters.

Slovenia: Postojna Cave, Lake Bled and Ljubljana

Small Slovenia packs in three of the tour’s most magical hours. At Postojna Cave, an underground train carries you deep into one of the largest cave systems in the world. At Lake Bled, a traditional boat takes you to the tiny island church below a medieval castle on its cliff — the view that appears on every Slovenian postcard. A guided walk in Ljubljana, the green and friendly capital, follows its river, dragon bridge and baroque squares, with dinner included and a free morning to enjoy the cafés before heading for Italy.

Two nights for Venice

The tour ends with two nights for Venice, with the hotel in Mestre on the mainland. A boat brings you from Tronchetto to St Mark’s Square, and a local guide walks you through the lanes and bridges of a city built on more than 100 islands, including a visit to a Murano glass workshop. The afternoon is free — perhaps for a gondola ride on the canals, an espresso in a historic café or the view from the Rialto Bridge.

Who this Balkans tour suits

This 13 days Balkans tour including Transylvania, Sarajevo, Dubrovnik, Plitvice, Bled and Venice suits travellers who have already seen Paris and Switzerland and want something different; history lovers curious about the Roman, Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and Yugoslav past; couples and friends who enjoy old towns and scenic drives; and families who like a guided coach tour where hotels, guides and most tickets are arranged. It covers a lot of ground — some days have long drives and border crossings — so it is best for travellers who enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

Best time to go and visa

May, June and September are the sweet spot — warm days on the Adriatic, green mountains and long evenings; July and August are hot and busy on the coast, while winter departures are quieter but the Lokrum boat does not run from November to March. Departures are on Sundays. Romania, Croatia, Slovenia and Italy are part of the Schengen area, so Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa; Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina have their own entry rules, which are usually easier for travellers holding a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa. Our visa team prepares the Schengen file and checks the current rules for every country on your dates — start about two to three months before travel.

Good to know before you book

Breakfast is included every day, plus eight dinners; lunches are mostly on your own, and vegetarian food is easy to find in the bigger cities. Border formalities between Bosnia and Croatia can take time, so carry snacks and water on that day. Comfortable shoes help in Dubrovnik, Plitvice and Postojna, and a light jacket is useful in the cave even in summer. International flights into Bucharest and out of Venice are booked separately — our team can book them from any Indian city. Prices start from €2,055 per person (₹2,26,050 at €1 = ₹110, October 2026) on twin sharing, excluding GST and TCS, and are recalculated for your exact travel dates and season.
