What Is a “Dummy Ticket”, Really?
“Dummy ticket” is not an official term. No embassy, consulate or VFS centre uses it. It’s a name travel websites use for a flight reservation that has not been paid for: a booking held in the airline system under your name, with a PNR (booking reference), that you can show as your planned route and dates.
The problem is that the same name is also used for fake documents: tickets made in an editor, or reservations that are cancelled minutes after you download them. Those are the ones that cause trouble. An officer who checks the PNR and finds nothing behind it has a reason to doubt the rest of your file.
So the question isn’t “should I buy a dummy ticket?” The right question is: “what flight document does my visa actually need?” The answer is simpler than most people expect.
What the Embassy Actually Wants: An Itinerary, Not a Ticket
When you apply for a tourist visa, the officer is checking one thing: does your trip make sense? When do you arrive, where do you stay, and when do you leave? Your flight reservation and hotel booking answer those questions together.

What matters is that the bookings cover every night of your trip and match the flight dates. If you land in Paris on the 10th and your first hotel starts on the 11th, that one missing night is exactly the kind of gap that raises questions.
Why Some Applications Still Get Rejected
Visas are rarely refused because the applicant didn’t buy a ticket. But our visa desk does see refusals that cite “improper stay or flight details”, usually alongside other missing documents. In practice, that means things like:
- Dates that don’t match: the flight says one date, the hotel another, the cover letter a third.
- Gaps in the stay: nights with no hotel booking in between cities.

After your visa is approved. That’s the standard advice from our visa desk, and it protects your money.

If you apply early, you get your decision with enough time to book flights at a good fare, instead of rushing a last-minute booking.
