How to think about picking your own length
There’s no minimum or “correct” duration. A short, focused trip (4-5 days) works well for families with young children, repeat safari travelers, or anyone with limited leave. A mid-length trip (8-9 days, like the group tour above) covers both countries without the extra parks. An extended trip (11+ days) adds the Ngorongoro Crater, Manyara, and Tarangire. When Does the 2026 Great Migration Actually Peak?
The Mara River crossings peak between late July and late September 2026, with early-to-mid August offering the highest probability of witnessing a dramatic crossing. This is narrower — and more useful — than the “July to October” range most sites quote.
Here’s the month-by-month reality:
- July: Herds arrive in the southern and central Maasai Mara from Tanzania’s Serengeti. Crossings at the Sand and Talek rivers begin first — smaller and less dramatic than the Mara River crossings everyone pictures. - August: The peak window. Herds concentrate around the Mara River, and this is when the classic images — wildebeest leaping into the water, crocodiles waiting — happen most frequently. On the July 2025 group tour, the group witnessed a crossing of an estimated 3,000–4,000 wildebeest at the Purungat crossing point in under 40 minutes.
- September: Herds spread out across the wider Mara to graze. Crossings still happen but are less frantic and more unpredictable — you may wait longer for one, but the Mara is quieter and easier to photograph.
- Early October: The short rains begin south of the border, and the herds start moving back toward the Serengeti. Late crossings are still possible but this is a narrowing window.
The number that matters most: roughly 3,000 Nile crocodiles inhabit the Mara River during migration season, concentrated at known crossing points like Purungat, Lookout Hill, and Serena Crossing. Guides know these points; independent travelers usually don’t — which is the single biggest reason a guided safari outperforms a self-drive one during migration season.
Kenya Alone, or Kenya + Tanzania — Matching the Trip to Your Time Budget
Both work well; the difference is scope, not quality. A Kenya-only trip keeps you inside one ecosystem, needs only one visa, and can be as short as 4 days. Adding Tanzania brings in the Serengeti and, if you go further, the Ngorongoro Crater and more parks — but adds a second visa and, depending on length, a mandatory vaccination.
