Couples, honeymooners and families who like to travel at an easy pace. Two nights in Bruges, rather than a rushed day trip, is the heart of this tour: it gives you the town in the quiet early morning and the evening, when the day visitors have gone.
Your trip begins in Amsterdam, the city of canals, clogs and cheese, with a free evening to find your feet. The next day is a full Best of Holland tour. In Volendam, wooden fishing boats bob in the harbour beside cheese shops and smoked-fish stalls; a boat crosses the IJsselmeer to Marken, a village of green-and-white wooden houses; and at Zaanse Schans the windmills still turn beside the river. The day continues to Delft, where blue-and-white Delftware has been painted for four centuries, and to The Hague, seat of the Dutch government, with the Binnenhof, Noordeinde Palace and Madurodam, the whole country in miniature.
Then the train carries you south, via Brussels, to Bruges, Europe’s best-preserved medieval town and a favourite of Indian travellers since scenes of PK were filmed here. It is said you cannot take a bad photo in Bruges. Cobbled lanes lead to the Markt, overlooked by the 83-metre Belfry, and the Burg with its Gothic Town Hall; canals reflect step-gabled houses; swans glide across the Minnewater, the Lake of Love. With a full free day, you can take a canal boat or a horse-drawn carriage, climb the Belfry, make your own chocolate at Choco-Story, visit the Frietmuseum, the only museum in the world devoted to fries, step back to the fourteenth century at the Historium, or taste Brugse Zot at De Halve Maan, the last working brewery in the town centre.
Your last stop is Brussels. A hop-on hop-off bus takes you to the Grand Place, one of the most beautiful squares in Europe, the cheeky Manneken Pis and the city’s famous chocolatiers, and Mini-Europe lets you see the whole continent, from Big Ben to the Acropolis, in a single afternoon.

April and May bring tulips to Holland, and summer brings long evenings for walking in Bruges. December turns Bruges and Brussels into Christmas-market towns. Bruges has only a small number of hotels in its old centre, so booking a few months ahead gives you the best choice.

After breakfast, check out and take the train from Amsterdam Central Station to Bruges, via Brussels. Check in and spend the rest of the day exploring Europe’s best-preserved medieval town on foot, by bicycle, by horse-drawn carriage or by canal boat. Overnight Bruges.

After breakfast, check out and take the train to Brussels. Check in at your hotel, then explore by hop-on hop-off bus: the Grand Place, the Manneken Pis and the chocolate and gift shops. Visit Mini-Europe, the continent in miniature (open about March to October). Overnight Brussels.
