Covid guidelines: Today, the National Cabinet convened to examine our reaction to COVID-19 and the Omicron variant, as well as novel methods for testing, tracing, isolating, and quarantining, as well as the vaccine rollout and booster programme.

Since the pandemic began, 362,690 confirmed cases have been reported in Australia, and regrettably, 2,226 individuals have died.

Globally, there have been more than 284.4 million cases and, unfortunately, more than 5.4 million fatalities, with 1,672,631 new cases and 7,752 deaths reported in the last 24 hours. COVID-19 infection levels continue to rise in a number of nations worldwide.

Professor Paul Kelly, the Chief Medical Officer, offered an update on the Omicron variant’s spread. The number of Omicron cases in Australia and throughout the world continues to rise. Omicron continues to be more pathogenic than the Delta form, albeit with a milder infection. Professor Kelly stated that a recent South African study demonstrated a 73% reduction in illness severity when Omicron was used instead of Delta.

In Australia, the total number of ongoing cases has surpassed 110,000. However, hospitalisation, intensive care unit, and ventilatory case numbers continue to be low and within expected capacity. There were 1,481 hospitalizations, 122 ICU admissions, and 51 ventilator-associated pneumonia admissions. These figures have been quite stable throughout time. The bulk of cases needing admission to the intensive care unit and ventilator continue to occur among uninfected individuals.

The distribution of the COVID-19 vaccination in Australia continues. To date, Australia has provided 42.4 million doses of COVID-19 vaccination, including 148,974 in the last 24 hours.

Over 94 percent of the Australian population aged 16 years and over have now received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccination, including over 98 percent of those over 50 and over 99 percent of those over 70. Over 91 percent of Australians aged 16 and older are now completely vaccinated, including over 96 percent of those over 50 and over 99 percent of those over 70.

Booster doses totaled more than 2.3 million. Australia maintains adequate booster supplies, with more over 20 million mRNA vaccinations on hand. Booster shots were administered to almost 112,000 people across Australia yesterday. Above 57% of those eligible for boosters have received one, while nearly 25% of Australians aged 70 and over have received one in the seven weeks since the booster programme began.

On January 5, 2022, the National Cabinet will reconvene.

In the context of high levels of COVID-19 community transmission, a novel strategy to Test, Trace, Isolate, and Quarantine (TTIQ) arrangements

National Cabinet has accepted to the Australian Health Protection Principals Committee’s (AHPPC) recommendation to reset TTIQ in light of the high case count and the Omicron variant, allowing Australians to continue living with COVID-19.

The improved approach complements the critical nature of immunizations, particularly booster shots, as well as existing public health and socioeconomic interventions.
